Construction on Henry Street in Whitby ends, road re-opens to traffic

WHITBY, ON October 21, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department is celebrating the completion of construction on Henry Street (Regional Road 45), from north of Highway 401 to Dundas Street, in Whitby.

“I’m pleased to announce that construction work on Henry Street is done, and the road is open from Highway 401 to Dundas Street,” says Susan Siopis, Director of Transportation and Field Services. “We recognize that this significant project impacted residents and commuters over the past two years. We’d like to thank residents for their patience throughout the duration of this project, as we work to make Regional roads safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.”

Improvements to Henry Street include:

Detours had been in place since work began last summer. The first phase of work (Highway 401 to Burns Street) was completed between August and December of last year. The next stage of construction (Burns Street to St. John Street), was completed between April and August of this year. The final stage of the project was completed on Oct. 19, and minor restoration activities (such as sodding and tree planting) should be finished by the end of October.

This project was carried out in collaboration with the Town of Whitby, which provided funding for new sidewalks and tactile plates on the east side of Henry Street, the reconstruction of Arthur Street and new LED street lighting.
