Growing together, reaching further, aspiring higher: A new strategic plan for the Region of Durham (2015 to 2019)

WHITBY, ON January 28, 2016

The Regional Municipality of Durham has finalized its five-year strategic plan for 2015 to 2019, which will act as a guiding document that will help to identify priorities for Regional Council, and create a framework for the Region’s service planning and delivery.

“The Regional Municipality of Durham is committed to serving the needs of our residents,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “The new strategic plan offers a roadmap for the next five years—establishing the long-term vision for communities in Durham Region, and outlining the Region’s important role in meeting the needs and expectations of our growing community.”

The strategic plan outlines the mission and vision for achieving the new goals and strategies developed to respond to the region’s continuously evolving needs. The goals are interrelated and based on the four overarching themes of:

The strategic planning process began in spring 2015 and was led by the Durham Region Strategic Plan Steering Committee—a group of four Regional councillors and two senior staff members from the Region. Residents were invited to participate in public consultation sessions to provide input and feedback for the plan. Following public consultations, a draft plan was developed and was available for review by those who participated in the consultation process.

“We would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback for the new strategic plan–community groups, businesses, staff and residents–your input is vital to the success of this plan and the future of our region,” said Regional Councillor Adrian Foster, Chair of the Durham Region Strategic Plan Steering Committee. “With your insight, we have developed a collective vision that reflects Regional priorities and objectives.”

“As a guiding document, the new strategic plan will align the work of staff and help to measure our performance as we move forward,” said Garry Cubitt, Chief Administrative Officer. “Essentially, the plan is the foundation from which we can develop a bright future for Durham.”
