Home-based businesses and farms: We want to hear from you! Complete the Business Count today

WHITBY, ON June 17, 2016

The fifth-annual Business Count is currently underway and The Regional Municipality of Durham is encouraging home-based businesses and farm owners and operators to participate by completing the Business Count online at, which will be open until Aug. 26.

The Business Count is a Regional project that aims to collect employment statistics and promote economic development initiatives. The project gathers data about local businesses, including the type and nature of the business, the number of employees, plans for growth, floor space and location.

“It’s important to us that we ensure home-based businesses and farms are represented in the Business Count project,” said Stephanie Jones, Manager of Data Mapping and Graphics. “The information collected through this initiative allows us to assist local businesses in reaching their goals, while also helping to build a stronger local economy.”

“Our goal is to connect with all types of businesses, in order to support Durham’s business community and provide them with more opportunities and resources,” said Nancy Rutherford, Manager of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. “Data collected from the Business Count is also important to ensure that the agriculture industry is recognized in Durham Region. Agriculture plays a significant role in Durham’s economy, and by participating, farms and home-based businesses can help us learn more about Durham’s business community.”

The information collected through the Business Count project will be used to update the business directory available at Businesses are encouraged to utilize the online directory to “look local first” when seeking out new suppliers. Data will also be used by Durham Region, area municipalities and Durham Workforce Authority, which are partners in the project.
