Durham Regional Council appoints new Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development

WHITBY, ON March 09, 2016

Durham Regional Council has confirmed the Chief Administrative Officer’s appointment of Brian Bridgeman to the position of Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development for The Regional Municipality of Durham.

“Durham Regional Council is proud to appoint Brian Bridgeman as Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “Bridgeman’s commitment and vision for the Planning and Economic Development Department, as well as the Region of Durham as a whole, exemplifies the values of this organization. He is an asset to the senior management team.”

In February, Bridgeman accepted the role of Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development, after spending 10 years as Director of Current Planning in the Region’s Planning Division. He started his career with Durham Region in 2005, which complemented his previous experience in municipal planning and consulting.

Bridgeman has been instrumental in many interdisciplinary corporate teams and has also taken leadership roles with many external committees and working groups, including the Emergency Management Working Group; Corporate Climate Change Committee; Planning Act Working Group; Conservation Authorities Liaison Committee; and Development Directors of Ontario. He has received a Bachelor of Environmental Studies degree from the University of Waterloo, a Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Western Ontario and has also completed the Leadership Program at Queen’s School of Business.

“I look forward to working with an exceptional group of forward-thinking professionals to support Council’s efforts towards sound planning and economic prosperity,” said Bridgeman. “My aim is to work with staff to develop and implement new ideas that will help Durham Region meet strategic goals.”

As part of his duties, the new Commissioner will oversee the delivery of regional land use planning and economic development services and initiatives, and will serve as a member of the Senior Management team to represent the Region’s interests on various internal and external committees.
