WHITBY, ON May 25, 2016

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department has received a Silver Promotion & Education Award for its Digital Tool, the Durham Waste App, from the Municipal Waste Association.

“Since we launched the Durham Waste App in September of last year, more than 15,000 residents have downloaded this tool for instant, mobile, customized access to information about waste collection,” says Cliff Curtis, Commissioner of Works. “The Region of Durham is honoured to be recognized by the Municipal Waste Association for our efforts to update communications and improve resident participation in our waste collection and waste diversion programs.”

Key features of the app include:
• A personalized collection day calendar for garbage, green bin, blue box, yard waste and other special curbside collections (such as household batteries and Christmas trees).
• Sign up for collection day reminders to pop up on your smartphone or tablet.
• The “Know Before You Throw” tool allows users to search waste items to discover proper disposal methods.
• Information on how to schedule special waste collection for bulky or porcelain items.
• The ability to report collection issues directly through the app (including a photo upload function).
• The ability for the Region to notify residents about service issues and program updates.

To download the free app on your smartphone or tablet, search for “Durham Region Waste” in the app store. The app is available to all residents of Durham who receive curbside collection service from the Region, except for residents of the Town of Whitby. Whitby has its own waste management app.

All features of the Durham Region Waste App, including the Know Before You Throw search tool, are also available online at www.durham.ca/waste. The website also offers additional collection alert options, including text message, phone call, iCalendar alert or email.
