Imagine a Day Without Water campaign highlights value of water

WHITBY, ON September 15, 2016

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department is participating in the Value of Water Coalition’s Imagine a Day Without Water campaign today. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness about the crucial need for investment in water infrastructure systems.

“An investment in our drinking water and wastewater systems is essential to securing a bright and prosperous future for generations to come,” said John Presta, Director of Environmental Services. “Most people can take for granted that when they turn on the tap or flush the toilet, water systems function exactly as they are supposed to, but the systems that provide critical water and wastewater services are aging.”

Municipal drinking water in Durham Region goes through a thorough and rigorous purification process. Water is screened, treated and filtered to remove impurities; disinfected; and then pumped through the water distribution system before being delivered to homes and businesses.

The hidden infrastructure that reliably brings clean water to homes and businesses, and takes it away after it has been used are showing the effects of a century, or more, of running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The problems our drinking water and wastewater systems face are multi-faceted. Drought, flooding, infrastructure failure, age, and climate change are just a few of the issues stressing our water and wastewater systems.

The Value of Water Coalition is coordinated by the US Water Alliance, a national non-profit dedicated to securing a sustainable water future for all. For more information about the Imagine a Day Without Water campaign, visit:
