Durham Region appoints new Works Commissioner

WHITBY, ON September 16, 2016

The Region of Durham is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Siopis, P. Eng. to the position of Commissioner of Works for The Regional Municipality of Durham on Oct. 1.

“It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Susan Siopis as Commissioner of Works,” said Garry Cubitt, Chief Administrative Officer. “Susan’s leadership and dedication in the Works Department, is well known amongst staff and Council members. She has proven herself to be a remarkable asset to the Region of Durham.”

Siopis takes on the role of Commissioner of Works, after 13 years as Director of Transportation and Field Services with the Region’s Works Department. She has been responsible for overseeing transportation infrastructure and design, construction management, traffic engineering and maintenance operations of all regional water, sewer and transportation related infrastructure. Her Regional experience is further complemented by previous municipal and consulting roles.

Siopis is well-known within the Region for her superior leadership and collaboration skills. Her contribution and guidance to Regional objectives have been vital to long-term strategic planning in the Works Department. She has also taken leadership roles with many external engineering and municipal committees, collective agreement negotiations, job evaluation committees and most recently as the Region’s United Way Champion. She is a Certified Engineering Technologist and a Professional Engineer in Ontario; she has also received her diploma in Public Administration.

“I will continue to work diligently for the residents and businesses within Durham to ensure the provision of essential public works services, along with the hard-working, dedicated staff of the Works Department,” said Siopis. “I'm looking forward to my new responsibilities, as well as building upon the strong foundation that is Public Works in Durham Region.”

The new Commissioner of Works will oversee the delivery of Regional services including the supply of drinking water, the collection and treatment of sewage, the provision and maintenance of a regional road network, Regional facilities management and solid waste management.
