Durham Region reminds residents to be prepared for emergencies this winter

WHITBY, ON November 18, 2014

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Emergency Management Office (DEMO) reminds residents to be prepared for emergencies this winter, such as the potential for severe weather, including winter storms, blizzards, freezing rain, heavy snowfall, extended cold temperatures and wind chills.

Emergencies can happen at any time, so it’s important that you and your family are always ready.

Emergency preparedness for you and your loved ones begins at home.

Education and preparedness are your best defence for reducing the impact of an emergency situation. The Region and its local area municipalities have emergency plans and programs in place. However, your own disaster planning is also essential.

Residents are encouraged to have an emergency kit in vehicles, in addition to an at-home emergency kit. For more details about what should be included in your kits (refer to the “Checklists for You” area), or additional information related to emergency preparedness, please visit

To receive a free copy of the “Are You Ready” brochure, which contains valuable tips on personal preparedness, call DEMO at 905-430-2792, or download it at, under the “Helpful Brochures” area.

To access updated information and instructions during an emergency, residents are reminded to monitor the Regional website and municipal websites, and Facebook and Twitter channels.
