Election signs on Regional roads to be in compliance with the Region's sign by-law

WHITBY, ON September 17, 2014

The Regional Municipality of Durham would like to remind municipal election candidates of the importance of following Regional By-Law No. 22-2014—which regulates temporary signs and banners on Regional roads—when considering placement of all election signs. 

A copy of the Temporary Sign By-Law No. 22-2014, and a list of Regional roads, is available online at The by-law helps ensure that intersection sightlines are safely maintained for pedestrians and motorists.

Signs in contravention of the by-law may be removed without notice and the owner will be responsible for all expenses incurred with the removal and storage. Signs not claimed within 15 days of removal may be removed and recycled by the Region without notice and without compensation.  

Signs must be removed within 48 hours after the election. The Region's Sign Recycling Program recycles all temporary signs, including election signs, made of corrugated plastic, plastic film and paperboard and supports keeping these materials out of landfill.  For more information on the Region’s Sign Recycling Program, visit
