Garbage bag limits relaxed and free drop-off extended

WHITBY, ON January 8, 2014 – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department is offering several special waste collection services to residents following the ice storm.

Until Jan. 10, garbage bag limits will be relaxed in all local municipalities receiving Regional garbage collection services. This includes the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, City of Pickering, Town of Ajax and Municipality of Clarington.

On Jan. 13, only yard waste (such as branches) may be placed at the curb for a special collection. Residents are asked to take advantage of this weekend's warmer weather forecast to bring any branches that were frozen in place, to the curbside for special collection. Regional contractors are doing their best to accommodate all branches that are brought to the curbside, however larger branches will not fit into the collection vehicles. Ideally, residents should tie, or neatly stack branches, less than 10 centimetres in diameter at the curb. Bundles should be approximately one metre or less in length and 76 centimetres in width. Please ensure branches and yard waste are not buried in snow or frozen to the ground and that the cut end of branches are pointed toward the street for easier pickup.

There is no limit to the amount of bundles during this special yard waste collection. Larger branches, including those longer than one metre in length, that cannot be collected at the curb may be taken to the Oshawa or Brock Waste Management Facility for free disposal. The Region is extending the free disposal for larger branches and brush until Jan. 30 at the Oshawa and Brock waste management facilities only. Please note, the Oshawa and Brock Waste Management Facilities will only accept large branches for free disposal from residents. Businesses and non-residents will be charged regular disposal fees.

The Region of Durham Works Department is working on offering an additional special collection for branches and brush in the spring of 2014 when the regular Yard Waste program resumes—additional communications will be issued when details are finalized.

Garbage, Leaf and Yard Waste and Green Bin collection for Oshawa and Whitby residents is the responsibility of the individual municipalities, not the Region of Durham. Oshawa and Whitby residents should refer to their municipal waste collection calendar for scheduled collection dates, or call their local municipality.

Residents are also reminded that Christmas tree collection has begun. For Ajax and Pickering residents' Christmas tree pick up will occur on regular collection days between Jan. 7 and 17. The final Christmas tree collection for residents of Brock, Scugog, Uxbridge and Clarington will take place on Monday, Jan. 13. Please ensure Christmas trees are not buried in snow or frozen to the ground.

Yard waste, such as downed tree branches, will not be collected with Christmas trees. Oshawa and Whitby residents should refer to their municipal waste collection calendar for scheduled collection dates, or call their local municipality.
