WHITBY, ON June 08, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department invites residents to drop off Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (MHSW) free of charge at a special upcoming collection event.

WHEN:

Saturday, June 20, from 8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine

WHERE:

Beaverton Community Centre, 176 Main St. W., Beaverton

WHY:

To provide Durham residents with a convenient, free way to properly dispose of MHSW. Examples of MHSW include: antifreeze; single-use and rechargeable batteries; brake fluid; motor oil and filters; fluorescent light bulbs and tubes; pesticides; herbicides; fertilizers; insecticides; medications; sharps (in a secure, rigid container); pressurized tanks (propane, oxygen, helium or other gases); pool chemicals; paints; stains and solvents. Commercial, institutional, agricultural or industrial waste is not permitted.

Residents are also invited to visit the Durham Transportation Master Plan (TMP) tent, which will be set up at this event. Staff will be on site to discuss the TMP principles and direction, as well as how the Region’s transportation should evolve. For more information, visit www.durham.ca/TMP.

NOTE:

Please consider the following tips when preparing to attend an MHSW collection event:

Through the Region’s Mercury Recovery program, residents will be given one free digital thermometer in exchange for old mercury-containing devices such as thermometers, thermostats, barometers, hydrometers and blood-pressure monitors.

Residents who drop off MHSW at this event can also pick up a free gallon of recycled paint (one per vehicle). Quantities are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition to collection events, residents may bring dedicated loads of MHSW to their local waste management facility for free disposal throughout the year. For waste management facility locations and hours of operation, visit www.durham.ca/waste.
