Durham Region reminds residents to be prepared for emergencies this summer

WHITBY, ON June 15, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Emergency Management Office (DEMO) reminds residents to be prepared for emergency situations this summer, such as the potential for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

WHEN:

Emergencies can happen at any time, so it’s important that you and your family are always ready.

WHERE:

Emergency preparedness for you and your loved ones begins at home.

WHY:

Education and preparedness are your best defence for reducing the impact of an emergency situation. The Region and its local area municipalities have emergency plans and programs in place. However, your own disaster planning is also essential.

Residents are encouraged to keep their at-home emergency kit stocked. For more details about what should be included in your kit, or additional information related to emergency preparedness, please visit www.durham.ca/demo. To receive a free copy of the “Are You Ready” brochure, which contains valuable tips on personal preparedness, call DEMO at 905-430-2792, or download it at www.durham.ca/demo.

NOTE:

For additional information and resources about severe storms, please visit www.durham.ca/demo and view the “Summer Weather Preparedness” fact sheet.

To access updated information and instructions during an emergency, residents are reminded to monitor the Regional website and municipal websites, and Facebook and Twitter channels.
