First annual update on comprehensive housing plan now available

WHITBY, ON June 24, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham released the 2015 Annual Report for “At Home in Durham, the Durham Housing Plan 2014 to 2024”—a comprehensive 10-year plan to address housing and homelessness in our region. “At Home in Durham” focuses on four key goals: End Homelessness in Durham, Affordable Housing for Everyone, Greater Housing Choice, and Strong and Vibrant Neighbourhoods.

The first in a series of updates, the 2015 Annual Report outlines current initiatives that support the four goals of “At Home in Durham” and establishes a framework to help guide future actions. This report also reinforces the Region’s commitment to work in collaboration with area municipalities, and non-profit and private sector organizations.

A report will be issued each year to measure the progress of the plan in achieving each of the four goals. In addition, a full review of the plan, including public consultations, will be conducted at least every five years.

Durham Regional Council approved the Durham Housing Plan in June 2014, following extensive community consultation.

The 2015 Annual Report was prepared by an Inter-departmental Steering Committee consisting of staff from a number of Regional departments, including Finance, Health, Planning and Economic Development, Social Services and Works, as well as the Office of the Regional Chair and Chief Administrative Officer. This committee was established to implement, monitor, and report on the progress of “At Home in Durham.”
