Please remember 20 kg weight limit when setting out waste

WHITBY, ON May 14, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department would like to remind residents to follow weight limits when setting out their waste for collection. The weight limit for waste items — including Green Bin source separated organics, Blue Box recyclables, Leaf and Yard Waste and Garbage — is 20 kilograms (44 pounds). Waste that exceeds the 20 kilogram weight restriction poses a health and safety risk to waste collection workers and will not be collected.

When setting out recyclables, please only use approved-size blue boxes, which are 83 litres (22 gallons) or less. Large oversized containers (some with wheels) are frequently over the weight limit and are not acceptable for curbside collection. The Region’s tall blue boxes should be used for containers only. If used for paper, the box will exceed the weight limit.

Leaf and yard waste should be placed in kraft paper yard waste bags or clearly-labelled rigid open-top reusable containers. Yard Waste set-out in plastic bags will not be collected. Containers cannot exceed 20 kilograms. Securely tie brush in bundles up to one metre (three feet) in length, and 76 centimetres (30 inches) in width, weighing no more than 20-kilograms (44 pounds).

Garbage bags and containers also must not exceed 20 kilograms (44 pounds) each. Overweight materials will not be collected and a non-compliance tag will be left behind on the items. Garbage bags that break when lifted will not be collected.

Green Bin, Leaf and Yard Waste and Garbage collection for Oshawa and Whitby residents is the responsibility of the individual municipalities, rather than the Region of Durham. These residents are asked to check their waste calendars, or contact their local municipality, regarding weight restrictions and the proper disposal of broken glass and sharps.

Residents are reminded to have waste materials at the curb by 7 a.m. on the day of collection. For more information on the proper disposal of waste, the Region’s Waste Management By-law 46-2011, or for the locations of Durham Region’s Waste Management Facilities, please visit, email, or call 905-579-5264 (toll-free at 1-800-667-5671).
