Protect the environment! Dispose of hazardous waste safely

WHITBY, ON May 18, 2016

Spring cleaning? The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department is reminding residents to keep Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste (MHSW) out of curbside waste. Paint, pesticides, oil containers, pool chemicals and many other household items are classified as MHSW, and can cause serious environmental damage if not disposed of properly.

Many products classified as Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste have warnings on their labels, such as: DANGER, FLAMMABLE, POISON, TOXIC, CORROSIVE. If you are unsure how to properly dispose of an item, use the Region’s convenient Know Before You Throw tool at or on the Durham Waste app.

The Region of Durham is committed to diverting hazardous and special wastes from contaminating groundwater and waterways. Residents are asked not to put MHSW in the regular garbage or blue box, and not to pour them down drains or catch basins.

Residents can dispose of MHSW for free at any of Durham’s Waste Management Facilities when delivered separately from other wastes during regular hours of operation. To learn more about MHSW and how to properly dispose of it, visit or download the Durham Waste app for Apple and Android devices.
