Grade 5 Action Pass returns for the 2014-15 school year

WHITBY, ON September 25, 2014

Abilities Centre new partner in long-standing program

Durham Region Health Department is again promoting the Grade 5 Action Pass to local grade five students, with support from Durham Region municipal recreation centres and other local sports facilities. New this year, students will now have access to activities at the Abilities Centre in Whitby.

“We’re really pleased to have the Abilities Centre join us as a partner in this program,” said Beth Cullen Keidann, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department. “This new partnership will provide grade 5 students with access to a variety of activities at the Abilities Centre.”

The Grade 5 Action Pass gives all grade 5 students in Durham Region access to free public swimming, public skating and some drop-in programs throughout their grade five year, from September 2014 to August 2015.  The Grade 5 Action Pass may be used at participating municipal recreation centres, Durham Family YMCA, Abilities Centre and Durham College/UOIT Campus Ice Centre. Now in its seventh year, this program benefits approximately 2,000 students annually.

“Children need 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity, such as swimming and skating each day,” explained Ms. Cullen Keidann. “However, results from the 2009 to 2011 Canadian Health Measures Survey found that only seven per cent of Canadian children are meeting this daily requirement. The Grade 5 Action Pass program supports grade five students to be active and enjoy free, fun physical activities every day.”

Students can obtain their Grade 5 Action Pass by visiting local municipal recreation centres or Durham Family YMCA; proof of address and date of birth must be provided. Students registering in the Townships of Uxbridge and Scugog must also bring a current one inch by one and a half inch size photo to obtain their pass. Students in the Township of Brock will receive their Grade 5 Action Pass at school.

Passes for the Abilities Centre should also be obtained at local recreation centres or the Durham Family YMCA; passes cannot be picked up at the Abilities Centre. All passes can be used at participating Durham Region recreation centres, the Durham Family YMCA and Abilities Centre.

The Grade 5 Action Pass is supported by Durham Region Health Department, Town of Ajax, Township of Brock, Municipality of Clarington, City of Oshawa, City of Pickering, Township of Scugog, Township of Uxbridge, Town of Whitby, Durham Family YMCA, Abilities Centre and Durham College/UOIT Campus Ice Centre.
