2013 Healthy Workplace Award recipients announced

WHITBY, ON February 27, 2014 - Durham Region Health Department has presented the 2013 Healthy Workplace Award, recognizing a number of local workplaces for their role in influencing the health and wellbeing of their employees. Workplaces are awarded for focusing on at least one of the following health topics in a comprehensive manner: healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco-free living, sun safety and cancer screening. Some workplaces also received awards in multiple categories.

Awards are presented to workplaces that plan health-related activities throughout the year to help employees learn more about how to make healthy choices. Awards are determined in three levels – gold, silver and bronze. Workplaces that receive an award are acknowledged for ensuring that the work environment is supportive of health, as well as having policies that support healthy practices at work.

“Adults spend about half of their waking hours at work, so the workplace has a huge impact on the health of employees,” said Georgette Lyons, a public health nurse with the Health Department. “The winners of this award have shown a dedication to health and wellness initiatives at their workplaces that support their employees.”

The Health Department congratulates the following establishments on achieving the 2013 Healthy Workplace Award:
