Enjoy your March Break with family and friends by being active

WHITBY, ON March 6, 2014 - Durham Region Health Department is offering area residents a free Physical Activity Family Toolkit to help you plan for an active March Break.

“The Physical Activity Toolkit will assist families to set an activity goal, make a plan to be active and keep track of their activities,” explained Lindsey Partridge, a public health nurse with the Health Department.

“March Break is a great opportunity to encourage your kids to play outside, get friends together for road hockey, go tobogganing, build a snowman, visit a local recreation centre or go for an indoor walk at the mall. Also, a number of local recreation centres are offering free public activities for area children over March Break and throughout the spring.”

Local grade 5 students can also enjoy an active March Break by taking advantage of the Grade 5 Action Pass. This pass allows grade 5 students an opportunity to enjoy free and unlimited access to public swimming, public skating and some drop-in programs at any participating municipal recreation centre, Durham Family YMCA and Durham College/UOIT Campus Ice Centre until Aug. 31.

The Grade 5 Action Pass is supported by Durham Region Health Department, Town of Ajax, Township of Brock, Municipality of Clarington, City of Oshawa, City of Pickering, Township of Scugog, Township of Uxbridge, Town of Whitby, the Durham Family YMCA, and Durham College/UOIT Campus Ice Centre.

“You can enjoy so many great health benefits from being physically active,” explained Ms. Partridge, “and you only need as little as 60 minutes of physical activity a day for children and youth, or 150 minutes a week for adults.”
