Durham Region EMS changes name to Region of Durham Paramedic Services

WHITBY, ON July 02, 2015 - At its June 24 meeting, Durham Regional Council approved the rebranding of Durham Region Emergency Medical Services to the Region of Durham Paramedic Services. The name change is being undertaken to better reflect the services provided by the Region’s paramedics.

“This change in name recognizes the significant contribution paramedics provide to ensure the well-being of the residents of Durham Region. It is also consistent with what is occurring in other paramedic services throughout Ontario,” explained Regional Chair Roger Anderson. “The medical services provided by our paramedics are an integral component of the overall health care system, and the Region of Durham Paramedic Services is one of the best service providers in Ontario with an exemplary performance record.”

Richard Armstrong, Chief of the Region of Durham Paramedic Services stated he is “very pleased with the name change and is extremely proud of the services’ paramedics. This new name not only more appropriately reflects the scope of our services, but also encompasses future expansion of paramedic services into non-emergency care such as, community paramedicine.

“Paramedics are highly trained and skilled in the delivery of pre-hospital emergency and non-emergency care. Before you can be employed as a primary care paramedic, you must complete a two-year college program, pass a provincial examination and be certified by a Base Hospital physician to perform delegated/controlled medical acts. An advanced care paramedic requires the completion of a three-year college program, passing the provincial examination and certification by a Base Hospital physician.”

The name change will be phased in over the next few years and will be reflected on both paramedics’ uniforms and the services’ vehicles. The phasing in of the new name will incur no additional costs to the service.

Region of Durham Paramedic Services is a division of Durham Region Health Department. As one of the largest paramedic services in Ontario, Region of Durham Paramedic Services is the sole certified ambulance operator for the Region of Durham. The service consists of a team of advanced care and primary care paramedics, operating out of 10 paramedic stations located throughout the Region.
