Health Department seeking input on Grade 5 Action Pass - Participants asked to share experiences in web contest

WHITBY, ON June 11, 2015 - Has your child enjoyed using their Grade 5 Action Pass? Durham Region Health Department would like to post your Grade 5 Action Pass story on its website. The Health Department invites you to share what you like best about the pass, where you’ve used it, or how you’ve benefitted from it.

The Grade 5 Action Pass has been available for the past seven years to grade 5 students throughout Durham Region. The program offers current grade 5 students free, unlimited access to public swimming, skating and some drop-in programs at participating area facilities. The pass can be used at Durham Family YMCA, Abilities Centre, Durham College/UOIT Campus Ice Centre and participating municipal recreation centres across Durham Region.

Grade 5 students or their parents are encouraged to submit their stories by email to, or by Canada Post to Durham Region Health Department - Grade 5 Action Pass Stories Contest, P.O. Box 730, Whitby, ON, L1N 0B2. Entries can also be submitted by fax at 905-666-6214. Submissions must be received by July 31 and participants will have a chance to win one of four $25 Sport Chek gift certificates. A complete list of contest rules and regulations are available at

“The Grade 5 Action Pass is an important program in our community, providing grade 5 students with free access to many activities and recreational facilities across Durham Region,” said Elizabeth Cullen Keidann, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department. “To achieve the best health benefits, children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

“Physical activity also helps children do better in school by improving memory, focus and concentration. The program can also help to increase the likelihood that children will be active adults by giving them an opportunity to lead a healthy, active lifestyle now and making it easier for them to build physical activity into each and every day.”

The Grade 5 Action Pass is supported by Durham Region Health Department, Town of Ajax, Township of Brock, Municipality of Clarington, City of Oshawa, City of Pickering, Township of Scugog, Township of Uxbridge, Town of Whitby, Durham Family YMCA, Abilities Centre, and Durham College/UOIT Campus Ice Centre.
