Be safe in the sun this National Sun Awareness Week, June 1 to 7

WHITBY, ON May 25, 2015 – Durham Region Health Department will celebrate National Sun Awareness Week, June 1 to 7, by reminding area residents to take measures to be sun safe this summer and all year round.

“Unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays in as little as 15 minutes,” explained Felicia Onwuemele, a public health nurse with the Health Department. “Taking the necessary measures to protect yourself, can reduce your risk of sunburn, premature aging, eye damage and skin cancer.”   

According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada, accounting for nearly one third of all newly diagnosed cancers.

The Health Department recommends practising these sun safety tips to lower your risks when enjoying outdoor activities this summer and all year round:
