Free activities for grade 5 students this summer

WHITBY, ON July 08, 2016 - Calling all students who have just completed grade 5 – it’s not too late to activate your Grade 5 Action Pass to enjoy lots of great activities throughout the summer months. The Grade 5 Action Pass gives all grade 5 students in Durham Region free access to public swimming, public skating, and other programs such as soccer and squash. The pass can be used throughout the summer until Aug. 31.

“The Grade 5 Action Pass is a great way for children to get active this summer, allowing grade 5 students to participate in a number of free activities across Durham Region,” said Aliya Desai, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department.

Research continues to show that Canadian children are not getting enough physical activity in their day. In fact, the 2016 ParticipACTION Report Card has given Canadian children a grade of D minus for overall physical activity for the fourth year in a row, finding that only nine per cent of children are getting the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

To encourage local children in getting active, Durham Region Health Department has partnered with area recreation centres to offer free programs through the Grade 5 Action Pass. Participating centres include the Oshawa Civic recreation centre, Audley Recreation Centre, Durham College/UOIT Campus Ice Centre, the Abilities Centre and many other local recreation centres. For a complete list of participating centres visit durham.ca/physicalactivity.

Grade 5 students can obtain their pass by visiting local municipal recreation centres or the Durham Family YMCA, 99 Mary St. N., Oshawa. Proof of address and date of birth must be provided. Students registering in the townships of Uxbridge and Scugog must also bring a current one by one and a half inch size photograph of themselves to obtain the pass. Students in Brock Township will have received their pass at school.

“We want to encourage everyone to get active this summer, so we’re inviting area residents to enter the Health Department’s outdoor play contest on Instagram from July 4 to Aug. 8,” said Ms. Desai. “All participants will have the chance to win a family activity kit and a $75 gift card.”

To enter the contest, simply follow @DurhamHealthyFamilies on Instagram and share a photo of how you and your family play outdoors using the hashtag #DurhamPlayOutside. See a complete list of contest rules and to get more ideas on how to keep you and your family moving all year long.
