About... Durham Region Health Department

Our Mission

Durham Region Health Department promotes and protects the health of Durham Region residents by providing a wide range of health enhancing programs and emergency medical services that address the growing and changing needs of our community.

Our Vision

Leading the way to a healthier Durham. We achieve this vision by encouraging healthy lifestyles and ensuring a healthy and safe environment for all residents of Durham Region.

Our Team

A team of dedicated staff are here to answer your questions about public health issues, whether the inquiries are about disease prevention, health protection or general health concerns.

The Health Department’s staff is made up of medical and dental professionals, public health nurses, nurse practitioners, community health nurses, public health inspectors, public health nutritionists, infant & child development consultants, epidemiologists, paramedics, tobacco enforcement officers, family visitors and administrative support staff.

Our goals are to help the people of Durham Region lead healthy, dynamic and satisfying lives by enhancing the environment where we live, work and play, and to contribute to healthy community planning and effective policy-making.

Our Focus

Our mandate is driven by applicable provincial laws (e.g., Ambulance Act, Health Protection and Promotion Act), standards (e.g., Ontario Public Health Standards and Protocols) and guidelines. Every year, we determine our health priorities and assess our prior year’s performance.

We work with our community partners to promote and protect community health, prevent infectious diseases, inspect for health hazards, and investigate occupational and environmental health hazards. We do this by monitoring the health status of our population to detect and track outbreaks, patterns of infectious and non-infectious diseases, demographic profiles, behavioural risk factors and adverse health events.

We also provide health promotion programs and services, management and control of diseases, clinic services including immunization and sexual health, and programs geared toward the early detection of cancer and to help support the best health choices for individuals, families and our community.

The Health Department is responsible for the administration of Durham Region Emergency Medical Services, providing paramedic services for residents of the eight municipalities in Durham Region. It also prepares for and responds to public health emergencies.
