Introduction

Durham Region Health Department is pleased to offer your workplace the opportunity to achieve the Durham Region Healthy Workplace Award. This award recognizes workplaces for their efforts to support the health of their employees.

The goal of a healthy workplace is to encourage employees to be healthy at work. A healthy workplace experiences many benefits including healthier employees, less absenteeism, increased productivity, less sick leave, and better workplace morale. Workplaces are unique. Within Durham we are proud to have multiple sectors providing services and job opportunities for Durham residents.

Workplaces can receive recognition by implementing a variety of health promotion strategies on a particular health topic. Strategies can include awareness raising, education and skill building, environmental changes, and informal or formal policies and guidelines that are reflective of your health topic.


How to Apply

  1. Choose your health topic and the activities that you completed.
  2. Complete the Healthy Workplace Award Application
  3. Submit all completed forms to Durham Region Health Department through one of the following submission methods:

Steps to Apply

Step 1: Identify topic(s) of choice: healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco-free living, substance misuse, falls prevention, injury prevention, motor vehicle safety, mental health, sun-safety, cancer screening, other. Choose one or more.

Step 2: Implement as many strategies as possible (minimum of 6 total)

Step 3: Complete application

Submit completed applications via: fax, email, pdf, post.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I apply for more than one risk factor topic?
    Yes, however it only takes successful completion of one topic to be awarded.
  2. Where can I apply for the award?
    The award application can be submitted by mail, fax, or through the public health nurse assigned to your workplace. A pdf copy of the award can also be downloaded, completed, and printed for submission.
  3. Can I apply for the award if I’m a previous award winner?
    Yes. Repeat winners demonstrate commitment to workplace wellness.
  4. Can I work on other topics outside of those listed?
    Yes, however the award applies to topics included in the list.
  5. Is there a deadline to apply?
    Yes, the application deadline is October 17, 2017.
  6. Who would I contact if I need help completing this application?
    Your public health nurse is available to help you with any questions you may have. Feel free to reach out!
  7. How are award recipients acknowledged?
    The workplace will receive a letter and a certificate with the option of a formal presentation at their workplace. We will also recognize award winners on our webpage and social media outlets.
  8. I am new to comprehensive workplace health. In fact, we have just started, can I still apply?
    Yes, absolutely! There is a place for every workplace to begin. Use the strategies described and circle all those that apply to your workplace.
