How does resilience help you manage your work stress?

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from stressful situations.  Having resilience prepares your body to handle stress better and can even allow you to respond positively to stress.

Everyone has the ability to develop resilience to manage work stress.

How can you develop your resilience?

Good news! Everyone has the ability to develop resilience to manage work stress. The following five things can help you manage stress more easily:

1. developing relationships

Positive relationships help you to feel supported at work. Supportive relationships with others can help you through stressful times.  Positive relationships help you to increase your ability to plan, meet goals and deal with challenges.

2. positive Thinking

Being able to think positively helps deal with stress. Positive thinking helps you look at obstacles and challenges as opportunities.

3. Competence

Know when to use strengths and when to ask for help so you don’t feel stressed. Competence is your ability to use your skills to influence what happens in your life.  It may be skills like problem solving and decision making, knowing how to set realistic goals and planning to reach them, as well as feeling a sense of control over what happens in life.

4. healthy coping

Your body is better able to respond to stress when you practice healthy coping. Choosing unhealthy coping methods can be harmful to health and will make it more difficult for you to deal with stress. The following behaviours help prepare your body to deal with stress:

Knowing your emotions and being able to manage them helps you to keep stress in check. Emotional intelligence means understanding and managing emotions. It can assist you to have better judgment and communication with your co-workers.
