Sun Safety
Save the Skin You're In... this Winter
If you’re enjoying Canadian Winter…
...you are exposed to increased UVR:
- at higher altitudes
- through the reflection of the sun's rays off snow
Sun Tips for Winter Fun
- wear sunglasses or goggles that offer UVR protection (children need eye protection too!)
- use sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF of at least 15 on exposed skin
When traveling South…
...you are exposed to increased UVR:
- at higher altitudes
- closer to the equator
- through the reflection of the sun's rays off of sand, water and cement
Sun Tips for Traveling South
- Seek shade or create your own.
- Limit your time in the sun between the peak UVR hours of 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
- Cover-up: wear a wide brimmed hat, a long-sleeved shirt and pants.
- Wear sunglasses with UVR protection.
- Apply a liberal amount of broad spectrum sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher 15-30 minutes prior to going outside. Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating.
- Keep infants under 1 year of age out of direct sunlight. Do not use sunscreen on babies under 6 months.
A base tan from the sun or artificial tanning equipment will not prevent sunburns or skin damage
