First Nations and Inuit Health Non-Insured Health Benefits Counselling

Family Services provides counselling to First Nations and Inuit clients who live and/or work in Durham Region, who are eligible for Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB).

Intake

First Nations and Inuit clients living in Durham Region are asked to call the NIHB Client Line toll-free at: 1-800-640-0642 to find out if they are eligible for counselling. Once eligibility is confirmed, clients should call the Family Services Durham’s Centralized Intake Line at 905-666-6240 (or toll-free at 1-866-840-6697), and provide their status number or client identification. Intake staff book the client’s first appointment with a counsellor.

Cancelling appointments

If it is necessary to cancel an appointment, 24-hours notice is required. If less than 24-hours notice is provided, half of the negotiated fee may be charged.

Clients who need to cancel an appointment with a counsellor after daytime office hours should contact their counsellor directly. Cases may be closed if there are two no-shows, two cancellations less than 24 hours, one no-show and one cancellation less than 24 hours, and/or no case activity for three months.
