What is PAR?

PAR stands for Partner Assault Response. It is a specialized, court-ordered counselling and education service for individuals who have been charged with a domestic assault against a spouse or partner.

What services are included?

PAR is a 12-session (two hours per week) group program for males, and an six-session (four hours per week) group program for females, that provides participants with the opportunity to examine their beliefs and attitudes towards domestic abuse, and to learn non-abusive ways of resolving conflict.

Program staff works with victims to provide assistance with safety planning and referrals to community resources.

Is there a fee for service?

Yes, fees are on a sliding scale based on income.

How do individuals learn about these services?

Referrals for service come from: The Crown Attorney’s Office, as part of the sentence, or from probation and parole services (operated through the Ministry of Community and Correctional Services).

How do I start?

All participants must complete the program application and then attend the intake assessment, in order to begin the group process.

Clients who have been convicted, found guilty of, or pleaded guilty to a criminal offence involving domestic violence toward a current or former partner.

Male intakes are facilitated every Monday at 2 p.m. only at The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters, located at 605 Rossland Rd. E. in Whitby. At the intake assessment, which is 1.5 hours in duration, clients are provided with an overview of the program, including the expectations for group members. Clients then sign the participation agreement and are assigned a fee based on their income.

Female intakes are facilitated every second Wednesday at 2 p.m. only at The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters, located at 605 Rossland Rd. E. in Whitby. At the intake assessment, which is approximately one hour in duration, clients are provided with an overview of the program, including the expectations for group members. Clients then sign the participation agreement and are assigned a fee based on their income.

When are the group sessions held?

Male PAR groups are held at The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters at the following times:

Tuesdays - 10 a.m. to noon; 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; 8:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.
Wednesdays - 10 a.m. to noon; 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; 8:15 p.m. to10:15 p.m.
Thursdays - 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; 8:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.

Female PAR groups are held at The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters every Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Female participants are required to attend six, four-hour sessions (one per week), which is equivalent to 12, two-hour sessions.
