Renewable Energy

The Ontario Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program allows homeowners, business owners and private developers to generate renewable energy and sell it to the province at a guaranteed price for a fixed contract term. The microFIT program is for renewable energy projects of 10 kilowatts or less.

Four rooftop solar panel systems have been installed at Durham Region Local Housing Corporation (DRLHC). The first project was completed at Green Street Whitby facility in 2011 and the generated electricity was sold to the grid through a contract with Whitby Hydro with $0.802/KWh and is bringing about $10,000 annually to Local Housing Corporation.

In 2013, three more microFIT rooftop solar photovoltaic systems were completed at DRLHC properties at a rate of $0.549/kWh for 20-years.
