Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Recycling Program in Apartments and Townhouses

Computers as WEEE The Region of Durham has positioned itself as a leader in municipal waste diversion with a focus on integrated waste management solutions. The Region of Durham operates an easy to use electronics (WEEE) recycling program in apartment buildings and townhouse neighbourhoods that receive Regional waste collection services.

This free recycling service provides residents with a convenient way to recycle their end-of-life or unwanted electronics right at home. Residents are able to bring electronics to the designated recycling area of their building for proper recycling.

The Region of Durham, in partnership with RecycleYourElectronics.ca - Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES), will provide storage containers and all materials necessary to promote the program and instruct residents on how to participate.

Building collection logistics

Yellow cartAll buildings are different when it comes to storage locations and collection options for WEEE. Sites are reviewed prior to beginning collection and the storage locations are approved based on the space available. This ensures that safe collection and storage can occur.

Collection of WEEE is conducted on a scheduled basis that is subject to change based on volumes. The collection contractor will collect the WEEE from the carts and leave empty carts so residents can fill it up again with acceptable WEEE. Carts are used to collect small electronic items such as cameras, cell phones, laptops, radios, modems, VCRs, DVD players, etc. Larger items that do not fit into the carts, such as TVs and stereo systems, should be placed beside the carts for collection.

Electronics collected from your property are transported to a consolidation centre, then to an OES approved processor for recycling. Visit the WEEE page for more information on WEEE recycling and to view videos on the processing of this material.

Protect Your Privacy

It is the responsibility of each resident to ensure that all personal data is removed from computer systems, cell phones and other electronics before recycling their equipment. Residents should take all necessary steps to clear hard drives, SIM cards and all memory storage areas of personal information before participating in this recycling program.
