Emergency Services

In the event of an emergency within Durham Region, the Social Services Department may provide services to its residents, including, but not limited to, shelter, food, clothing, registration and inquiry and personal services, such as family reunification. There may also be the requirement to open an evacuation centre, or multiple centres, depending upon the scope of the emergency.

The Social Services Department works closely with the Community Emergency Management Co-ordinator (CEMC) in each of the region’s eight local area municipalities and with community partners such as: the Canadian Red Cross, Salvation Army, St. John Ambulance and OVERT (The Ontario Volunteer Emergency Response Team).

Through training and emergency exercises, Social Services staff has been prepared to respond to an emergency, and will be able to provide the residents with the assistance that they require.
