Durham has a network of 60 arterial roads over 827 km in length, linking all corners of the Region's geographical area. The Regional road system provides connection to local road systems and Provincial highways. The Works Department maintains and upgrades the Regional road system, including preventative maintenance, winter maintenance, repairs and new construction, to provide safe and efficient road transportation network.
The Region of Durham places all roads within its jurisdiction under weight restriction regulation from approximately March 1, each year to approximately May 1. The specific period is set annually. The period of restriction may vary depending on the conditions in the specific area. It is common that the weight restrictions are in place longer in the northern part of the Region.
