Cathodic Protection of the Water main System

Information for affected homeowners

Every year the Region of Durham Works Department schedules Cathodic Protection installation in selected areas of the region. Work typically takes place between early June through to early September each year. Once started, the installation process takes between 48 hours and 1 week to complete. Affected homeowners are notified directly by way of newsletter.

For affected homeowners, please note the following:

  • During the course of construction, we endeavour to keep any inconvenience to a minimum. We ask if you could please avoid parking automobiles on the street during construction.
  • Traffic detours, when necessary, will be in place during the construction period with local / emergency traffic and garbage collection permitted.
  • The Region's policy is to reinstate all roadways, boulevards, driveways and lawn areas that are disturbed by new construction work. Restoration will be completed promptly. To assist with the restoration, please water the replaced sod as needed.

Cathodic Protection of the Water main system greatly reduces the extent of corrosion damage to the Water main. It lengthens the life of the Water main by many years and reduces service interruptions caused by corrosion breaks, and eliminates the need for re-construction and the interruptions associated with it.

Cathodic Protection of a Water main is a process by which a 14.5-kg sacrificial magnesium anode is attached to the water main. This allows any corrosion to take place on the anode and not on the Water main.

The anode is attached by auguring down to the Water main and spot-welding it to the Water main.

The plastic "Test Stations" seen in certain locations are used to monitor the effectiveness of the anodes. They will have a sticker on them with a phone number for you to call if they become damaged or you have any concerns.

Thank you for your patience and co-operation.

After hours construction emergency calls should be directed to 905-576-9991
