2013 Community Events

These events provide convenient opportunities for Durham residents to recycle their end-of-life or unwanted electronics.

Electronics are not garbage.  They should be handled and recycled properly.  Many electronic products contain materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury, bromine, and other hazardous materials that can harm the environment and human health when disposed of improperly.

The collected electronics will be sent to an Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) approved processor who carefully dismantles the items and separates them into individual components by commodity such as metal, glass and plastic.  All OES approved processors are based in Ontario and operate under safe and controlled working conditions governed by strict OES standards.  Once the components are safely dismantled and separated, valuable commodities such as steel, aluminum, copper, glass, and plastic are shredded, smelted or processed as raw materials for future production.  Recycled plastics are used to manufacture water pipes, recycled glass is fabricated into new monitors or TVs, and metals can be minted into new coins.

In addition to collection events, residents are encouraged to bring dedicated loads of their unwanted e-waste for free disposal to their local Waste Management Facility throughout the year during regular hours of operation.  Staff will direct residents to a dedicated collection area, where the collected equipment will be stored before being hauled to an approved processor. 

Please note that waste management facilities accept loads containing only electronics (E-waste) FREE OF CHARGE.
