Miramedia: Making Information More Human Through AI Voice Technology
As technology has evolved, so have expectations around how people access information. Whitby-based Miramedia has been at the forefront of this shift, helping businesses create more natural and intuitive ways for people to connect with information.
"We got into AI voice technology very early and spent years focused on research and development to create the best voice experience possible," says founder and CEO Raji Kalra. "We're optimistic about a future where customers increasingly expect to simply talk to technology and receive the information they need instantly."
With more than two decades of experience supporting brands and retailers, Miramedia builds more human experiences through voice, media and storytelling. Its Voice Model platform develops AI-powered voice solutions that help businesses replace confusing self-service experiences with simple, natural conversations.
Addressing Gaps in the Customer Experience
In its early days, Miramedia set out to solve a common challenge for businesses: help customers access reliable information when they need it most.
This was especially apparent in the health and wellness industry, where consumers often require additional guidance when purchasing vitamins, supplements and other products that involve research and thoughtful decision-making.
"We provide AI voice technology both in-store and online, giving customers access to the most important information before making a purchase," says Raji. "If someone asks a question that isn't currently in the system, we update it so the experience becomes even better for the next customer."
Beyond improving access to information, Miramedia's technology provides organizations with valuable insights into customer engagement, usage patterns and the time saved by reducing the need for staff intervention.
"We measure key metrics to help businesses continuously improve their service and better understand how the technology is being used," Raji explains.
"Most importantly, it's about accuracy. We started in the health and wellness space, where people often have legitimate concerns and questions. We take that responsibility seriously and focus on delivering reliable, trustworthy information. That's something we really pride ourselves on."
Bringing Voice Technology to Communities
While Miramedia's roots are in health and wellness, its technology is being applied across a wide range of industries and communities.
Through its Voice Model platform, the company recently partnered with the Downtown Whitby Business Improvement Area (BIA) to create a customized voice assistant that helps visitors navigate the downtown core and discover local restaurants, shops and services.
It debuted during the Home Sweet Home Festival at the Downtown Whitby BIA information booth, providing visitors with a more engaging way to explore downtown Whitby while giving the BIA a new channel for connecting with the community.
Putting People First
Raji’s approach to AI is firmly rooted in a human-centred philosophy. He believes people naturally gravitate toward solutions that make life easier and more connected.
"One of the most powerful aspects of our technology is its multilingual capability, supporting 32 languages," says Raji. "This is especially valuable for businesses serving diverse communities, helping improve inclusivity and reduce barriers to accessing information. It gives people the flexibility to interact in the language they're most comfortable with."
Alongside accessibility, Miramedia places a strong emphasis on trust. Its AI solutions are thoughtfully managed by a team of people, with clear boundaries around privacy, security and the information provided, ensuring responses remain accurate, appropriate and aligned with each organization's needs.
Growing in Durham Region
For Miramedia, growing in Durham Region was both a strategic decision and a natural fit.
"We wanted to grow within an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Greater Toronto Area, connect with local businesses and build a stronger presence," says Raji.
Through the 1855 Technology Accelerator, the company found a foundation to scale its operations, collaborate with fellow entrepreneurs and tap into a broader support network. The environment also created opportunities to work alongside students from Durham College and Ontario Tech University, helping foster innovation and develop future talent.
"Being part of a community where people are building and sharing ideas has made a tremendous difference," Raji says. "It's rewarding to learn from others and exchange ideas with like-minded entrepreneurs."
Raji also points to the region itself as a source of inspiration.
"I love Durham. It's a great place to build a business and has everything needed to support innovation and growth."
A Voice-Driven Future
As Miramedia continues to grow, the team sees AI voice not merely as a feature, but as the next evolution in how people interact with technology.
"When we look at how technology has evolved, from the internet and email to smartphones and social media, every step has transformed the way we connect," says Raji. "We believe voice will be another major shift in that journey."
At the same time, Raji emphasizes the importance of staying connected locally.
"Durham is a strong place to build and grow. There's a supportive network of entrepreneurs doing meaningful work and helping one another succeed."
That spirit continues to shape Miramedia's vision: making information easier to access through simple, natural, and more human interactions.
Miramedia also offers additional platforms, including Saru, a platform designed to help families preserve memories through voice.
