Background
Durham Region is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange among the Mississauga Peoples, and is the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
The Region includes eight local area municipalities with a current population of 650,000. It is expected to grow to 1.2 million by 2041.
The 2019 Durham Region Community Energy Plan (DCEP) found that transportation is responsible for more energy use, costs, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than any other source. This is because most residents use personal vehicles as the main way to travel. Along with promoting public and active transportation, such as taking the bus, walking, and cycling, Durham can take the lead in electrifying transportation. This will benefit the local community and provide a roadmap for other communities to follow in the future.
By working with government partners and car dealers across the region, this project will provide education and information, helping residents to transition to zero emission electric vehicles (EV), making Durham Region an EV-friendly community.
