Region launches process for considering Settlement Area boundary expansion requests
Whitby, Ontario – As part of Envision Durham’s Growth Management Study, the Region of Durham will be reviewing requests for Settlement Area boundary expansion.
When: New and/or amended requests for Settlement Area boundary expansion are now being accepted until May 31, 2021, as part of a 90-day submission window.
Why: The Provincial Growth Plan requires that the Region plan for 1.3 million residents and 460,000 jobs within the 2051 timeframe. The Growth Management Study will include a Land Needs Assessment which will assess the Region’s land base, and evaluate how much, if any, additional urban land will be required to achieve the provincial forecast.
If additional urban land is required, the Growth Management Study will identify the most appropriate location for Settlement Area boundary expansions.
Where: Submissions should be made directly via email to EnvisionDurham@durham.ca with a response to the criteria identified within Report #2021-P-7 (Appendix C: Settlement Area Boundary Expansion – Evaluation Criteria) released on March 2, 2021.

Note: As Council’s core planning document, the Regional Official Plan guides Regional decision-making on long-term growth and development.
