The effects of alcohol occur more quickly, last longer and cause more physical harm than for men.

Even when women drink the same amount as men, they tend to have higher levels of alcohol in their blood. This is because:

  • Women have less water in their bodies than men
  • Women have fewer enzymes needed to break down alcohol than men.

Heart disease and stroke are the leading cause of death among women in Canada. Heavy alcohol use can increase blood pressure and increase the risk of some forms of heart disease and stroke.

Heart health benefits from alcohol come only from drinking very small amounts (as little as one drink, every other day). This is mainly for people over the age of 45 years.

Drinking alcohol is a known cause of cancer. There is no safe level of alcohol consumption for cancer prevention. If you still choose to drink, reduce your risk of developing cancer and limit it to:

  • Less than one drink a day for women
  • Less than 2 drinks a day for men

Did you know that about 7% of new cases of breast cancer are linked to alcohol?
This means over 600 cases of breast cancer occur a year in Ontario!

To reduce your risk from alcohol
If you don't drink alcohol don't start. If you choose to drink, drink less and follow these tips:

  • Eat before and while you are drinking
  • Think about the strength of your drink - choose one with less alcohol
  • Choose non-alcoholic drinks more often
  • Know what a standard drink is...
  • Set a limit for yourself and stick to it

  • Be aware of how your drinking affects others
  • Women as parents are powerful role models for their children
  • Women's drinking patterns can be influenced by those of their partner,
