Are you ready for springtime flooding?

WHITBY, ON March 29, 2016

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Emergency Management Office (DEMO) reminds residents to be prepared for emergency situations this spring, such as the potential for flooding caused by melting snow or heavy rains—which can result in unsafe driving conditions, as well as issues in and around your home, and increased water levels in local bodies of water. For your safety, please contact your local conservation authority for information on flood forecasting and warnings. A list of local conservation authorities is available on under the Community Resources heading.

Emergencies can happen at any time, so it’s important that you are always ready.

Emergency preparedness begins at home.

Education and preparedness are your best defense for reducing the impact of an emergency situation. The Region and its local area municipalities have emergency plans and programs in place. However, your own disaster planning is also essential.

Residents are encouraged to restock their at-home and vehicle emergency kits after the winter months. For more details about what should be included in your kits, or additional information related to personal emergency preparedness, please visit

Get your copy of the updated “Are You Ready?” brochure, which contains valuable tips on personal preparedness, by downloading it online at, emailing, calling 1-800-372-1102 ext. 2792, or picking it up in person at The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters at 605 Rossland Rd. E. in Whitby.

To access updated information and instructions during an emergency, residents are reminded to monitor local media, and official government websites and social media channels.
