Get active this March Break with the Grade 5 Action Pass

WHITBY, ON March 09, 2015

March Break is fast approaching and Durham Region Health Department is offering an opportunity for grade 5 students to get active with the Grade 5 Action Pass. Now in its seventh year, the program offers current grade 5 students free unlimited access to public swimming, skating and some drop-in programs at participating facilities until Aug. 31. The pass can be used at Durham Family YMCA, Abilities Centre, Durham College/UOIT Campus Ice Centre and participating municipal recreation centres across Durham.

“This March Break, we hope that grade 5 students will take advantage of joining their friends in skating, swimming and other free activities by obtaining the pass,” explained Kristen Reinink, a public health nurse with the Health Department. “Being active is not only fun, it’s also healthy for the body, mind, spirit and immune system.”

To achieve health benefits, children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day,” Ms. Reinink added. In Durham Region, only 30 per cent of elementary school students and 20 per cent of high school students meet the daily physical activity recommendation.

The Grade 5 Action Pass is supported by Durham Region Health Department, Town of Ajax, Township of Brock, Municipality of Clarington, City of Oshawa, City of Pickering, Township of Scugog, Township of Uxbridge, Town of Whitby, the Durham Family YMCA, Abilities Centre and Durham College/UOIT Campus Ice Centre. For more information on obtaining a Grade 5 Action Pass, please call Durham Health Connection Line at 905-666-6241 or 1-800-841-2729.
