Discover Durham Familiarization Tour showcases Durham Region to global investors

WHITBY, ON July 16, 2015

To highlight economic and investment opportunities in Durham Region, members of the Durham Economic Development Partnership (DEDP) hosted a familiarization tour this week, from July 14 to 16, showcasing the region’s valuable assets and strong business community to local and international delegates.

Local stakeholders, businesses, trade partners, and potential investors liaised with DEDP members, as they were introduced to Durham Region’s successful agri-food, digital technology, energy, manufacturing and tourism sectors. Delegates from South and Central America, as well as representatives from the Brazilian Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Toronto Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, were invited to participate in the event.

“The goal of the familiarization tour was to strengthen our relationships with international delegates and business leaders, and offer them a chance to learn more about Durham Region’s economic sectors,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “With the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games currently taking place, this week’s tour was a prime opportunity to showcase everything that Durham has to offer to potential investors.”

The three-day tour included seating at a preliminary men’s baseball match at the President’s Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark; a guided tour of Algoma Orchards in Clarington; and networking receptions at Nestleton Waters Inn in Scugog, Axalta Coating Systems in Ajax, and Parkwood Estate in Oshawa.

“The tour provided delegates with a first-hand experience of the region’s strengths,” said Robert Nolan, Manager of Investment Attraction. “Moving forward, we will continue to work with partners and stakeholders in South and Central America to demonstrate how our communities provide the best place for investment.”

DEDP is a collaborative working group made up of economic development representatives, including staff from the Region and Durham's eight area municipalities, executing strategic work plans that support economic growth and prosperity in Durham Region.
