Durham Region recognizes Waste Reduction Week

WHITBY, ON October 14, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham will be recognizing Waste Reduction Week from Oct. 19 to 25, with an official proclamation by Regional Chair and Chief Executive Office Roger Anderson on behalf of Regional Council.

“The Region of Durham is proud to join municipalities across Canada in celebrating Waste Reduction Week, a campaign to educate, engage and empower Canadians to reduce waste,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “We encourage all residents to consider new ways to reduce their waste this fall and all year round. From buying in bulk to reduce packaging to choosing reusable shopping bags over plastic bags—every effort counts.”

In celebration of Waste Reduction Week, residents are invited to view a series of educational displays that will be set up in the main lobby at Durham Regional Headquarters from Oct. 19 to 23.

On Oct. 24, residents can drop off reusable items free of charge at the Durham Region Waste Management Facility in Whitby for Reuse Day. Also on Oct. 24, there is an electronic- and hazardous-waste collection event taking place in Pickering. For more information, visit

“With convenient curbside collection, Reuse Days events, and waste management tools such as the Durham Region Waste App—which is now available in the app store for Apple and Android mobile devices—it’s easier than ever for residents to responsibly manage their waste,” said Mirka Januszkiewicz. “We hope these services will help Durham residents continue to make more environmentally conscious choices.”
