Update 3: Information about Provincial Food Gift Card distribution in Durham Region

WHITBY, ON January 9, 2014 –Residents are advised that the Provincial Food Gift cards provided to Durham Region have all been assigned. Residents calling 1-888-721-0622 will reach an automated message informing them that applications for Provincial Food Gift cards in Durham are no longer being accepted, as there are no more cards.

Residents who are in need of food can access a local food bank. A listing of local food banks is available on the Region's website at, under the headings: Departments > Social Services > Income Support. If you require financial support, please contact the Ontario Works central intake number at 905-428-8982 (or toll-free at 1-877-678-6333) for details related to the application process for social assistance.

Note: pre-qualified, eligible applicants were notified of their pick-up location. Pick up will begin on Friday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. The pick-up locations will remain open until 7 p.m., in order to allow for people to come throughout the day to help make wait times more manageable. When picking up their card, eligible applicants will be required to bring identification with proof of address.

In order to participate in the Provincial Food Gift Card Program, the Province required Durham Region, through its local hydro utilities, to supply data related to the number of customers who were without power for at least 48 hours. Local hydro providers advised that there were 13,529 customers without power for 48 hours or more. Durham shared this information with the Province and in return received 1,882 $50 gift cards for distribution.

The Region would like to thank residents for their patience and co-operation during the roll out of the Provincial Food Gift Card Program in Durham Region.
