Sewage Treatment

At the Region’s sewage treatment plants, wastewater undergoes primary and secondary treatment to clean the water prior to release back into the lake. Sludge from the sewage system is treated using anaerobic digestion (bacteria working without oxygen to break down the sludge) and sent for land application or to incineration.

In the Region of Durham we have 11 Sewage Treatment Plants, 52 Sewage Pumping Stations and 2,122 km of Sanitary Sewers.
