Measuring the Health of our Local Economy

Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 01:59 PM

Fall 2021

There is considerable difficulty in measuring the health of Durham Region’s economy. Traditional methods of measuring economic growth and activity (such as GDP) are not available for Durham Region, so we often rely on numerous individual data points to get a sense of how the economy is performing. However, these data points often run in contradiction to one another (e.g. high unemployment and strong housing sales/prices) making it difficult to draw any conclusions on the state of the...

Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 01:59 PM

Winter 2021

Research tells us that the health of immigrants declines after a period of time in Canada. Access to healthcare and other health services could be a key factor. The purpose of this project was to explore ways we can increase our understanding of the newcomer healthcare experience.

The Social and Economic Impact of the Child Care Fee Subsidy Program

Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 01:59 PM

Winter 2021

The Region of Durham has offered childcare fee subsidy, in order to help parents with the cost of childcare, for over 20 years. In that time however, there had not been a robust data analysis to assess the impact of the fee subsidy program from either an economic or social perspective.

The goal of the current project was to assess the economic impact of the fee subsidy program, such as how it has affected family income over time and the broader impact on Durham’s economy.

Trail Safety in Durham Region

Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 01:59 PM

Winter 2021

The purpose of this project was to develop ideas for how we can improve the safety of multi-use trails throughout Durham Region. We wanted to investigate ways to make Durham trails safer for all residents. The impact of the project will be seen in future policy work as it will help to bring awareness and discussion of trail safety. The recommendations will help to either bring new ideas forward or put ideas listed in the report to action to increase general safety.
