Durham residents encouraged to plant trees to combat climate change

Whitby, Ontario – Property owners are invited to put down roots, thanks to a partnership between a local not-for-profit organization and participating Durham municipalities, who will provide support to restore and improve properties by planting native trees and shrubs.
Starting today, residential, multi-unit, or commercial property owners—located in the City of Oshawa, City of Pickering, Town of Whitby and Township of Scugog— can apply to the subsidized Backyard Tree Planting Program offered...
Donation bins at Durham’s Waste Management Facilities have now reopened

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham is advising residents that donation bins, operated and collected in partnership with Diabetes Canada and Salvation Army, have now reopened for donations at our Waste Management Facilities (WMF).
When: Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Regional WMFs in Oshawa and Port Perry. Donation bins are located after the weigh scales.

Whitby, Ontario - The following represents beach-posting information for Durham Region beaches. Test results for the week of July 6 indicates that two beaches have been posted as unsafe for swimming due to elevated bacteria levels. Beaches are posted as unsafe for swimming when elevated levels of E. coli exceed the provincial standard of 200 E. coli per 100 ml of water.

Be Water Smart: Conserve Durham water

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham is reminding residents to limit all non-essential indoor and outdoor water use by practising water conservation methods during this heatwave as much as possible.
Limiting all non-essential indoor and outdoor water use includes cleaning driveways or decks, washing cars and lawn watering. During extreme hot weather, water conservation is necessary to maintain adequate water levels to deal with emergencies, including fire protection.
