Building belonging together; Durham celebrates National AccessAbility Week
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“National AccessAbility Week starts today (May 31) across Canada.
This week is a chance to celebrate the leadership, resilience and achievements of persons with disabilities, and to recognize the many individuals and organizations working to remove barriers. It’s about sharing stories, uplifting voices and continuing to build a region where everyone can fully participate in community life.
This year’s theme of ‘Building a Strong, Accessible Canada’ reminds us that accessibility benefits everyone. When people feel connected to their community and experience a true sense of belonging, it creates the foundation for a more welcoming, inclusive and resilient Durham Region.
That belief is at the core of our work every day. We take a big-picture approach to accessibility, embedding inclusion into our programs, services, spaces, communication and workforce.
This week and beyond, I encourage you to celebrate progress, reflect on the barriers that still exist and be part of the continued effort to build a stronger, more accessible Durham Region for everyone.”
