Building understanding and strengthening relationships during Indigenous History Month
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Since time immemorial, the lands and waters we now call Durham Region have been home to the Michi Saagiig Anishnaabeg. Their relationship with this land is rooted in responsibility, respect and care. As original stewards, their teachings, traditions and ways of knowing continue to guide how we understand our shared responsibilities to the land, the waters and each other.
June 1 marks the beginning of National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to honour and reflect on the enduring histories, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
Across the country, communities are coming together to reclaim, strengthen and celebrate Indigenous cultures, languages and knowledge. Each of us has a responsibility to support and contribute to this work.
Reconciliation is not symbolic. It’s an ongoing lived process grounded in truth, accountability and relationship. It calls on each of us to walk together in a good way, listen with openness, learn with humility and act with intention. These actions form the foundation to build stronger, more meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities.
Which is why I encourage you to take time to learn and engage through stories, community gatherings and shared experiences—not only during June, but throughout the year—as part of our collective responsibility to deepen understanding and build a stronger shared future.”
