Creating spaces where everyone belongs on International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“True inclusion happens when accessibility is a guiding principle in everything we do. It means making sure that every person—regardless of ability—has the opportunity to participate fully in social, economic and cultural life.
It begins by acknowledging the persistent and significant barriers that people with disabilities continue to face in employment, education, social protection, public spaces and service delivery. These challenges show that accessibility is not optional—it’s essential for creating an inclusive society that respects dignity, autonomy and agency.
On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we celebrate people of all abilities and their contributions to our region. We also reaffirm our commitment to building communities where diversity is embraced, barriers to accessibility are removed and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
