Durham team makes waves at provincial competition

The Region of Durham’s Works Department proudly showcased its talent and dedication at the 2025 Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA) Conference and Trade Show, with the Durham Direct Tappers delivering outstanding performances across multiple competitions.
The team—comprised of Tyler Jackson, Blake Vanderzalm, Justin Storms, Jack Steinsky, Doug Walton, Salvatore Moncada, and Micah Dejong—demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork throughout the event.
In the tapping challenge, team members Tyler Jackson, Blake Vanderzalm, Justin Storms, and Jack Steinsky secured an impressive second-place finish, building on their strong showing from 2024. Meanwhile, in the hydrant challenge, Doug Walton and Salvatore Moncada came within just nine seconds of first place—a remarkable feat for the newly formed duo competing under the Durham Direct Tappers banner.
Adding to the Region’s success, Micah Dejong was named OWWA Meter Competition Champion, earning top honours for his precision and expertise in the meter challenge.
Also on hand during the competition was Matthew Fair, Head Coach, Coordinator and Logistics as well as Dave Stewart, Coach, Rules and Compliance.
The OWWA Conference and Trade Show is Ontario’s premier drinking water event. It draws over 1,000 delegates from across the industry—including operators, regulators, consultants and suppliers—and features more than 100 exhibitors. The event offers a valuable opportunity to network, explore new technologies, and stay current on regulatory and technical developments.
